All You Should know About QSFP+

With the constantly updating network, 10G transceiver is appearing in order to provide a better channel for 10 Gigabit Ethernet. But then 10 Gigabit Ethernet can not satisfy people to pursuit the faster data transmission rate, so there comes 40 Gigabit Ethernet. 40 Gigabit Ethernet is a standard that enables the transfer of Ethernet frames at speeds of up to 40 gigabits per second(Gbps). 40G QSFP+ transceivers are designed for 40 Gigabit Ethernet try to keep up with the continuous development of the network. And how many do we know about 40G QSFP+ Transceiver? The next paragraph will answer this question.

What Is 40G QSFP+ Transceiver?

40G QSFP+ transceiver is a product developed on the basis of 40G QSFP transceiver. 40G QSFP transceiver has four independent full duplex transceiver channels, and is a four channel minitype plugable optical transceiver. It is used for high-density applications. Compared with the traditional SFP+ optical transceiver, the port density is higher and the cost of whole system is lower. 40G QSFP+ transceiver conforms to various standards such as SCSI, 40G Ethernet, 20G/40G Infiniband and so on. It has four data transmission channels, the transmission rate of each channel is about 10Gbps, and the transmission of four channels can get 40Gbps at the same time. This optical transceiver mainly has two kinds of interfaces: LC and MTP/MPO. They can also be divided into several categories according to the transmission distance: 40GBASE-SR4, 40GBASE-LR4, 40GBASE-ER4.

Different Types Of 40G QSFP+ Transceiver

We have already knew three kinds of 40G QSFP+ Transceiver in the above. And in this paragraph we will introduce them that mentioned in the last section.

40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+

Many vendors use “QSFP-40G-SR4” to identify 40G QSFP+ modules that support by 40Gbase-SR4 standards. 40Gbase-SR4 QSFP+ is the most popular 40G fiber optic transceiver for transmission in short distances, that is, 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ module supports link lengths of 100m and 150m, respectively, on OM3 and OM4 multimode fibers. It is a parallel fiber optic transceiver containing an MTP/MPO interfaces, which uses 4*10G transmission pattern.

40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+

40GBASE-LR4 QSFP+

40GBASE-LR4 QSFP+ transceiver is a parallel single-mode optical transceiver with duplex LC connector. Moreover, it offers four independent transmit and receive channels and each channel is capable of 10G operation for an aggregate data rate of 40G on 10 km of single-mode fiber. The guide pins inside the receptacle could ensure proper alignment. Usually, the cable cannot be twisted for proper channel to channel alignment.

40GBASE-ER4 QSFP+

40GBASE-ER4 QSFP+ permit link lengths up to 40km with duplex LC connectors. The 40GE or OTU3 signal is carried over four wavelengths in the 1310nm range. It also offers four independent transmit and receive channels.

Conclusion

As mentioned above, three of 40G QSFP+ transceiver are suitable for different  transmission distance and all have four channels for higher rate transmission. 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ transceiver supports MTP/MPO connector which is different from the others. Anyway, they are the same in function to transmit 40G data. In a word, 40G QSFP+ transceiver promotes the development of high-density and high speed signal transmission, which brings the optical communication into a new era.
